Money, Barter & Trade

Before money, you had to swap a chicken for a haircut. Here's why that was a nightmare — and how a clever invention fixed it.

We measure every price in money, but money isn't obvious — for most of history it didn't exist. People bartered: they swapped goods directly. It worked, barely, and it was slow and clumsy. Money was invented to fix a very specific problem, and once you see that problem, you understand what money really is — and why trade, between people and between countries, leaves everyone richer.

💡 Big idea 1 — The trouble with barter

In barter, you swap what you have for what you want — no money. The catch: it only works if the other person happens to want exactly what you're offering, at the same time. Economists call this needing a "double coincidence of wants."

Mia has extra apples and wants a haircut. But the hairdresser doesn't want apples — she wants shoes. So Mia must first find someone with shoes who wants apples, then… you can see how quickly this becomes a headache.

💡 Big idea 2 — What money does

Money is anything everyone agrees to accept in exchange. It quietly does three jobs:

Barter needs a lucky match between every pair. Money is one thing everyone trades through — far simpler.
💡 Big idea 3 — Trade & specialisation

Because money makes swapping easy, people can specialise — each do the one thing they're best at — and trade for everything else. A farmer grows food, a vet heals horses, a builder builds; each trades their work for money, then money for what others made. Countries do the same: Spain sells oranges, Germany sells cars, and both end up with more than if each tried to make everything alone.

Worked Examples
Worked Example 1 — a barter chain

Mia has a spare riding crop. She wants a sketchbook. The art-shop owner doesn't want a crop — he wants coffee. The café owner wants a crop! Show how Mia gets her sketchbook by barter, and count the steps.

Step 1: Mia trades her crop to the café owner (who wants it) for coffee.

Step 2: Mia trades that coffee to the art-shop owner for the sketchbook.

It took two trades and a lucky chain. With money, it's one step: sell the crop for money, buy the sketchbook. That's the whole point of money.

Worked Example 2 — why specialising wins

In one hour, Mia can groom 3 horses or paint 1 sign. Her friend Leo can groom 1 horse or paint 3 signs. A stable needs 3 horses groomed and 3 signs painted. Should they each do a bit of both, or specialise?

Specialise: Mia grooms for 1 hour → 3 horses done. Leo paints for 1 hour → 3 signs done. Total time: 1 hour each, everything finished.

If instead each did half of both, it would take longer and be done worse. By each doing what they're best at and trading, they get more done in less time. That's the power of specialisation.

  5. Problem 8 Open
    Invent a "stable currency" for a group of kids who help at a stable — a token they earn for chores and spend on things like riding time. Describe: what the token is made of (why?), how you'd stop people from faking it, and how many tokens one hour of riding should cost. Explain how your token does all three jobs of money. There's no single right answer.

Think like an economist 🧠 — Money has almost no value by itself — a coin is just metal, a note is just paper. It works only because everyone believes everyone else will accept it. Money is really a shared agreement — one of the most useful ideas humans ever invented together.

Problem 1
It means both people must want exactly what the other is offering, at the same time. It makes barter hard because you often can't find someone who both has what you want and wants what you have.
Problem 2
(1) A way to swap — she sells old tack for money, then buys art supplies. (2) A way to store value — she saves pocket money for boots. (3) A way to measure — money lets her compare a €120 saddle to a €40 bridle. (Examples may vary.)
Problem 3
Apples rot, so they can't store value and won't be accepted later; they're also all slightly different, making them a poor measure. Coins last, keep their value, are accepted by everyone, and come in fixed amounts — good for all three jobs.
Problem 4
(a) Mia trades honey → candle-maker (who wants honey) for candles; then candles → bookseller (who wants candles) for the book. (b) 2 trades. (c) With money: 1 step really — sell honey for money, buy the book (2 simple money exchanges, but no lucky chain of matching wants needed).
Problem 5
£100 × 1.15 = €115. The UK saddle (€115) is cheaper than the German one (€120).
Problem 6
Each country specialises in what it makes best/cheapest — Spain in oranges (warm climate), Germany in cars (factories) — then trades. Both get oranges and cars more cheaply than if each tried to make both, so both end up better off.
Problem 7
(a) Ana is better at baking (4 vs 2); Ben is better at sewing (4 vs 2). (b) Ana bakes 1 hour → 4 loaves; Ben sews 1 hour → 4 bags; done in 1 hour each. (c) Each doing their best job produces more per hour than splitting time on the task they're worse at, so specialising finishes faster and better — then they trade.
Problem 8
Open. Look for: a durable token (stores value), some anti-faking feature (a stamp/signature — trust), a sensible price for riding time (a unit of measure), and it being accepted by all the kids (a way to swap) — i.e. it fulfils all three jobs of money.
